Why Choose the 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Test

Adequate levels of vitamin D prevents serious bone disorders in adults and children, including osteomalacia and rickets. Vitamin D deficiency may contribute to other conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cognitive impairment in older adults and severe asthma in children.

Why Consider this Test

  • This test can detect vitamin D deficiency in people with risk factors such as limited sun exposure, older age, darker skin, breastfed infants, obesity, and previous gastric bypass surgery.
  • Supporting bone health, adequate vitamin D levels help to prevent bone malformation in children and bone weakness, softness or fracture in adults.
  • When vitamin D, calcium, phosphorus, or magnesium supplementation is necessary, this test can be part of monitoring treatment effectiveness.

Preparation For Your Test

No special preparations are needed for a vitamin D test.

Understanding Your Results

Your results report will show whether your vitamin D level is adequate (76 to 250 nmol/L), insufficient for good health (25 to 75 nmol/L), or indicates a deficiency (less than 25 nmol/L).

If your test shows a deficiency in vitamin D, it may mean you are not getting enough exposure to sunlight or vitamin D in your diet, or that your body is having trouble absorbing the vitamin D in your food. A low result may be an indicator of kidney or liver disease. Too much vitamin D can also cause problems. If your test detects an excess, it is most likely due to too many vitamin pills or other supplements. In order to reduce your vit D levels, you will need to stop taking these supplements.
