Sexually transmitted infections are a growing risk in Canada. Here’s what you can do to stay on the safer side of sex.

About the Test

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium chlamydia trachomatis.

This screening test detects the presence of chlamydia genetic material in your urine sample using a very sensitive method called nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT). NAAT is the recommended testing method for screening of chlamydia.

Chlamydia

If symptoms appear, they will typically start within one to three weeks after exposure; however, infection can be asymptomatic. Infection can spread to sexual partners even if symptoms are absent.

Symptoms can be intermittent or even absent in as many as 40-96% of men. When symptoms are present in men with chlamydia infection, they usually include urethritis, dysuria (pain during urination), and discharge from the penis that is usually clear. Epididymitis (testicular pain) can also occur.

If you are curious about your STI status and wellness, and you are a sexually active individual (i.e., male or female), it is a good idea to consider screening for STI if you meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Sexual contact with an individual who has been diagnosed with an STI
  • A new sexual partner, or more than two sexual partners in the past year
  • A history of prior STI
  • You have symptoms compatible with an STI
  • You are pregnant

Oftentimes, individuals with one STI infection can be co-infected with another, which is the reason multiple organisms are included as part of this test panel.

Before starting sample collection, view test instructions by watching video or downloading instructions below.

Why Choose the Sexually Transmitted Infections Home Testing Kit

The STI Panel offers screening for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and Trichomonas from a urine sample. This is a screening test for individuals who are curious about their STI status in this sample type (e.g., if you have genital symptoms consistent with chlamydia, gonorrhea, or Trichomonas STI), or for wellness purposes.

Regardless of your age, gender, ethnicity, or sexual orientation, you can become infected with chlamydia, gonorrhea, or Trichomonas if you have sex without sufficient protection. Importantly, in some cases these STIs don't produce symptoms – especially during the early stages of infection. However, you could still pass an STI on to someone else if you have sexual contact without protection, even if you do not currently have symptoms.

Understanding Your Results

Test results will describe whether chlamydia, gonorrhea, or Trichomonas genetic material was present or absent in your sample, or if the result could not be conclusively determined.

The report results can include either:

  • Detected, i.e., screened positive for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and/or Trichomonas in urine, which may warrant further clinical management for STI.
  • Not detected, i.e., screened negative for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and/or Trichomonas in urine, which may indicate you do not have an STI
  • Indeterminate i.e., the STI result could not be conclusively determined, and further testing may be required), or
  • Invalid, i.e., there was an issue with the test or sample that prevented it from producing a valid STI result, and further testing may be required.

The tests used by Dynacare to detect chlamydia, gonorrhea, and Trichomonas in your urine sample are highly sensitive (94-100%) and specific (>99%). Note retesting may be required if your results do not match your specific clinical picture and risk profile.

Reinfection can be common, so if you have tested positive for chlamydia, Trichomonas or gonorrhea, you may need to be rescreened 3 months after completion of treatment. In addition, a test of cure can be conducted 3-4 weeks following completion of treatment when compliance with treatment is not optimal, if symptoms persist, or if you are pregnant.

In rare cases, such as if there is an issue with the sample, the test may be cancelled.

Always speak with your health care provider to fully understand your results.
